Organizations

Organizations are tailored around the environment and community in which they exist. Their goals and values are products of who creates them as well as where and the type of organization that is created. In an example, it would be expected for a medical institution in an urban environment to be focused on being able to take care of a large number of patients as well as being able to take care of spontaneous accidents or incidents that could easily occur. On the other hand, one in a more rural environment would probably not be able to take care of larger-scale accidents or the more serious incidents.

The schools I’ve been to have all been tied to the community in some way. Nevada Union High School, for example, was very sports oriented, as the community tends to value physical activities more than other practices. Because of this, the school had also valued physical activities over others, and devoted more funds and attention to the football team than other facets of the school, like the music or drama departments.

  1. Ideally, organizations are tailored to fit the community and environment. Or if not, they will probably wind up going out of business. I found it interesting that you mentioned a medical institution as your example. I have been to the emergency room at UC Davis, and I have to tell you that my experience was beyond horrible. I was there with a kidney stone, and no, it is not life threatening, it just feels as if you are going to die. I spent almost ten hours in the waiting room before I got to the back, and then another three hours before a doctor actually looked at me. He ordered me some pain meds, but after yet another two hours, the pain subsided on its own. I waited another hour and could not flag a nurse down, so I just pulled out all of the needles etc, and bleeding like a stuck pig, walked out of that zoo.

This was a long-winded example of how an organization can let its constituency down. Now I do not expect UC Davis to close its doors any time soon, but I can assure that I will not ever return there again. My guess is that the people running the place are so far removed from the every day operations that they have no idea what it is like to actually have to go through the E.R.

  2. your bottom paragraph was kinda what i talked about in mine to. about how sometimes certain high schools in certain citites are all about sports. another reference to this was the tv show "friday night lights" i dont know if anyone has seen that show but in the small town of texas, friday night football was all the town cared about. the football players got special perks and everything.
